At NSH Locksmiths we're used to many types of lock issues and problems. We can offer you a fast turn around time and get your door working as quickly as possible.
There are many ways that locks and locking mechanisms can fail. Locking mechanisms in particular are very complicated mechanical items and like most things of that nature they can begin to wear over time and show signs of failure. Below are some of the symptoms that you may be experiencing:
Have you snapped your key in the lock? At NSH Locksmiths we have rescued many locks from snapped keys.
A snapped key can present a couple of problems to a home owner. Either the key is snapped in a position where the door is unlocked and you can no longer lock the door. Or, the complete opposite where the door is locked and you can no longer open it.
Sometimes a snapped key can be as simple as that. Maybe you were in a rush and pulled the key at the wrong angle when removing it and ping. It could be that the key that snapped was of poor quality and was bound to break at some point.
However, there can be an underlying problem with either the cylinder or the multipoint locking mechanism that is the reason for a snapped key. This can be presented in the form of a key that is really hard to turn in the lock. Or you can only turn the lock so far and are struggling to get to the point where you can remove the key after locking or unlocking the mechanism. Please don't leave it too long before calling a locksmith when you are noticing these symptoms. You could end up with door that is locked shut or permantly unlocked.
Does your door have floppy handle syndrome? NSH Locksmiths have changed many multipoint UPVC door mechanisms because of this.
Handles should be at rest at almost 90 degrees to their face plates. If your handle is sagging slightly or a lot then it could be that the multipoint mechanism on your door is about to fail. This is a classic tell tale sign. Sometimes it can be the spring pack in you handles that is wearing out. Other times it can be the fact that the handles are really old and the internals have worn that much that they naturally begin to sag.
More often than not it usually means that the multipoint mechanism needs to be replaced. Or parts of the multipoint mechanism. There are so many different brands and models of mechanism out there. Some multipoint mechanisms have to be changed completely. There are others when you can replace the broken item for a brand new replacement and all is well again. It just depends on the brand and model that is in your door. Here at NSH Locksmiths we understand that this side of things can be more expensive than a typical lock change. We will never do the work and give you a surprise bill. We will always let you know the cost before undertaking the work.
Are you having trouble opening and closing your door? We have fixed many multipoint mechanisms in Wasall and the surrounding areas due to opening and closing issues.
If something is catching when you open and close your door. There is a possibility that the multipoint locking mechanism on your composite or upvc door is showing signs of wear and tear.
As previously mentioned. These mechanism are quite complicated mechanical items. Over time the parts can wear especially if they have had no grease applied to them for a while. If you look at the side of your door when lifting the handles up and down you will see the mechanics of the locking mechanism in action. They are all linked together and as metal items wear over time they will stop operating as they should.
For instance when you pull the handle down to release all of the hooks and rollers from their keeps. The hooks may stick out slightly and not return to their original positions. This will make the door much harder to open. You may even hear and feel a thud against the frame as you pull the door. This is the sound of the hooks knocking against the frame. This will lead to even further wear of these mechanical items and accelerate to the failure of them.
Eventually the hooks will remain in their keeps regardless of how hard you pull on the handle and you will be locked inside your property or even locked out. If you are experiencing these types of symptoms then please call us and we can sort it before it gets to the business of lock outs. Sometimes it can be a simpler solution as well. The symptoms can be very similar to a door that requires adjustment. Either way it is best to get this checked out to prevent further damage to your upvc/composite door or the multipoint mechansims inside them.
